Free forming with laser cladding

Free forming: In this video, we used laser metal deposition to create a flat sheet of metal to cut out samples for a tensile test, building up the sheet layer by layer. We wanted to see how blown powder compared to a wrought material. The chart on the last frame shows the test results. The blown powder was slightly lower in performance than wrought material, but not too far off.

Porous material is typically welded using more conventional methods such as GTAW or electron beam welding. Due to the low density of this material, those processes could not successfully weld these components. Laser cladding, combined with low heat and metal powder as filler created a successful project.

    Is there a minimum thickness requirement for the overlay material for inner diameter hydraulic cylinder applications? What about cracking over time cause by difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the base material and the overlay material? I assume people are using 420 stainless or tungsten carbide for overlay materials?

    You should install an air blade to blow away the spatter. Expensive to replace the protective lens often.
